A huge shoutout to the visionary behind this piece! @teejvp Turning the mundane into the magnificent—this is what happens when you look beyond the ordinary.
Artist Statement – Folded Oddness:
Not often do I find calmness in Soviet architecture. It’s inspiring in its own way, but to me, it brings a certain sweet melancholy. In my work, I try to avoid that feeling because Soviet architecture lacks beauty—it was designed with pure function in mind, cramming as many people as possible into a limited space, which is horrible. But in Folded Oddness, you can see that even purely functional things can hold a grain of beauty—if you’re sharp-sighted enough to find it.
MGPoem:
Lines that press, that stack, that fold,
A history of stories untold.
Built for function, cold and tight,
Yet within—an artist’s light.
Where eyes see gray, the keen find gold,
A beauty quiet, firm, and bold.
MGInterpretation:
“Folded Oddness” challenges the notion that utility and beauty must be separate. The rigid geometry of Soviet architecture, built without artistry in mind, transforms into an intricate design when framed through a different lens. The composition plays with structure and perception, asking the viewer: Is beauty an inherent quality, or is it something we uncover through perspective? In the folds of concrete, there is a quiet elegance—an odd, unexpected grace waiting to be seen.
